Coaching from a Systems Perspective
As human beings we know we are part of a whole, a natural system that is interconnected and interdependent. Viewing our world from a systems perspective gives us access to the richness of interactions available to us. From this position we can identify our internal and our external systems and how they create the space in which we interact with the world.
Across a wide range of disciplines, there is an emerging consensus on the systemic nature of all things; a greater recognition that we are all parts of a whole. Research has demonstrated that performance isn't always just about how hard a person works or how smart he is. Sometimes individuals find themselves in systemic structures in which they behave in particular ways in response to the system. No matter how hard they try (from their usual approaches) they are challenged. Looking from a "systems perspective" can provide opportunities for learning and being that may not be seen from an individual (or parts) perspective.
The foundation for this approach is the coaching model developed by the SoL consultants and deployed in numerous business, non-profit and government settings over the past several years. The workshop engages head, heart and hand with brief presentations, paired coaching practice with peer observation, reflection time and small group learning circles with follow-up case stud practice.
